Update from Chrissy Lukanga

Dear friends & partners,

The whole province is in a mess. There is pain and anxiety. Thousands of people are fleeing from one corner of the province to the other corner. Thousands have become homeless. Thousands stretched to limitshave lost all they had and are now living either in temporary shelters or in the streets. Many are still in the bush either lost in the thick bush of this province or still searching where to go, now without water or food. Unfortunately thousands have lost lives because of some evil people.

We have been stretched to our limits in terms of rendering help to those who have lost everything. Almost every day we have people knocking at our door asking for help. We have seen people collapsing in our yard because of hunger. There are horrible and terrible things happening here as well as shocking stories as people are fleeing the evil attacks and killings of people by the terrorists.

super sadThe baby in the picture on the right was picked up by this Mwani woman of Mocimboa da praia, a mother of two children who was running for her life in the bushes. She found this baby boy wallowing in a pool of blood which was flowing from his dead mother. This lady has taken on this child as her own even when she herself is a refugee and internally displaced person.

Another lady with a baby witnessed the cutting into pieces of her husband who was a teacher in Muidumbe district while she was pregnant with the baby she is carrying.

We know of two small girls, whose aunt is our neighbour, who witnessed the killing of both their father and mother being cut into pieces with machetes or pangas. They reached Pemba with the help of some Good Samaritans who were also fleeing for their lives. Imagine the trauma these girls are going through. Women are being sexually abused, and children are traumatised as they are forced to watch the killings of their parents by the terrorists using machetes. The numbers of orphans continues to increase.

Now everyone’s strength in Pemba is gone. The mood in Pemba is tense as we are all aware that any time now Pemba could be attacked. The insurgents have indicated that during this time of Ramadan they will carry out an attack. We are no longer safe here and I urgently need to get my family out of here and back to Zambia. We all need a COVID-19 test to allow us to travel out of Pemba which we are working on now. The challenge is that we also want to take some of our essential goods with us, the reason being that we do not know when the situation will normalise,. Also, foreigners are now the target with their property as per the recent case of Palma, where the foreigners who took shelter in one of the hotels were attacked and be headed.

Depending on the COVID-19 test results the family should be moving out anytime soon. Please pray for God’s intervention and God’s provision of transport to enable my family to leave Pemba for a while. Thanks for the care, concern and every support.
