Update from Nyamasore

received on timeOur main mission at Nyamasore as a community is to facilitate and implement programs and projects for socio-economic empowerment among communities, research, education, spiritual ministry, and training including health and wellness of both young and old. Our water project for the elderly is one of the pillars in our mission to enhance the health and wellness of the community. Access to clean water by the elderly is a great achievement under the Nyamasore RECADA Organization. This water project becomes the sister to the main Nyamasore Integrated Farming and Enterprise Development (KEN12).

Our main purpose for this project was to:

• Help reduce the water shortage problem in the community mainly among the elderly women
• To provide sustainable, accessible and clean consumable water to the community members
• To help the elderly women to easily access clean water, earn a living and meet their daily basic needs for a healthy old age through selling and maintaining the project

Achievements

We received our two water tanks on time as the supplier promised. The tanks came all the way from Nairobi to Nyamasore and were delivered safely.

Installation

The installation work was a bit of a process but at the end all of it was done. As soon as we received the tanks, we started with the guttering process all around the house.

As the guttering process was going on, the digging of the space where the tanks were to be installed was also happening.  This exercise was followed by the cementing of the big hole that was dug in the ground, before placing the tanks into the ground.

Challenges

A few challenges were experienced during these exercises and in the process we realized that a few important things were not considered in our budget.

1) We did not consider the gutter material in our budget which was a key thing during installation.

to collect water2) The engineer who was installing the tanks realized that the height of the house was very low which means half of the tank needed to go deep down in the ground to allow the flow of the water from the gutter to the tank.

3) The first engineer who gave us the quotation, realizing the few mistakes he made, decided to run away and leave the job halfway forcing us to hire another new person to take up the job.

4) Because of some of the challenges our budget went a little high from our proposed budget subjecting us to borrow some money from our main farmer’s account.

Conclusion

finally installedThe installation of the tanks went well and we are in the process of collecting water. The old ladies are very excited about the program. During the installation we realized that because the tanks are dug deep down in the ground, for better service a pump may be necessary to pump the water into a smaller tank raised up so that the flow of the water will be sufficient. However, with the plumbing that has been done, the water is ready for use.
