Key People: Chrissy & Suzen Lukanga
This report has been compiled with information received from Chrissy via email. BHW's last visit to Mozambique was in July 2023.
Update
Since the national elections in October 2024, the political and security situation has become dangerous. Around this time, Chrissy and Suzan had problems with their immigration status but managed to get this sorted and were able to return to Zambia to visit their family. In February, while they were back in Zambia, Chrissy injured his lower back. He was in pain and unable to walk properly for over a month. Chrissy returned to Pemba in March.
All their children are in Zambia except for Katendi who is with them in Pemba, Luwi is still in secondary school. In mid-May they intend to return to Zambia to attend to the needs of their children once they get financial resources.
A team from BHW was planning to visit in July 2025. However, the political situation has cause the trip to be postponed for a year.
Context
Besides the constant threat of civil war, the Pemba area was hit by Cyclone Chido in January which wiped out many houses. Four houses of church members were destroyed, and these families are having to live without shelter.
The Cabo Deligado terrorists continue to terrorise villages and communities in the north and around Pemba, with deaths and destruction of property. This is creating a lot of needs for the people and Chrissy and Suzen are feeling the effects of this as people are looking to them for food and shelter. It is also making their mission work very difficult and risky.
Ministry
Chrissy and Suzen’s focus continues on evangelism and church planting within Muslim communities. The church members in Pemba run most of the church services which allows things to continue when Chrissy is away with family responsibilities in Zambia.
Chrissy has 10 evangelists/church planters in the area north of Pemba who are being helped by funds for small business start-ups.
In October, Chrissy visited the Balama Impiri Church, 450 km to the north of Pemba where they conducted a Baptism Ceremony. This trip is dangerous due to the terrorist threat, but he was able to complete this safely.
There is a lot of demonic and witchcraft activity in the Pemba area but over this recent Easter period they experienced God’s power and saw some unusual miracles, e.g. broken legs were instantly healed.
They are encouraged and thankful to God and give Him all the glory for what He is doing.
Personal Stories
Over the Easter weekend, a young man in his twenties vomited out a lock, a razor and a paper note with some Arabic written on it during a prayer time.
Teresa Daniel Munguambe is a 69-year-old lady who had been diagnosed last August with cancer of the uterus. For the 30 days prior to Easter weekend she would go to the toilet and nothing comes out. She would sit there in the toilet and nothing. Sometimes she would feel like weeing, she would go to the toilet and only a few minutes later she feel the need to go again. This has been her life but after prayer on resurrection Sunday all this changed and the following Sunday she came back, walking about 4 kms, to testify of how the resurrected Christ gave her complete healing and to give glory to God. She was booked in for an operation the first week May but that was cancelled.
The influence of the project can be seen in the increase in numbers coming to church, most of them from Mu$lim backgrounds. This is causing issues in terms of space and with a higher profile, creating more visibility, which may not be a positive thing.
This year Chrissy will continue to visit Balama Church and possibly start the building project there.
They are planning to bring all the evangelists working in the north to back Pemba in June, for training and encouragement.
If the political and security situation improves, they are planning two big Gospel crusades - one in Pemba and another in Balama District.
They are wanting to build a house back in Zambia for their retirement and also replace their church building in Pemba as it is too small for their current numbers, and their current building is also needing repair and a roof replacement as it leaks badly in the rain. They may look at running two services to accommodate the current numbers. Their thinking is that if they had a new building, they could also use it for a preschool to provide some income during the week.
- Political unrest
- Threat of terrorism
- Travelling to northern villages is a challenge due to political situation but more, the activity of Mu$lim rebel groups
- Freedom from oppression for some community members
- Many Mu$lim people are coming to faith, so the church is growing
