Zahle is the city in the heart of the Be'qaa Valley. This has been a troubled hot spot for many years during the internal conflicts in Lebanon and latterly the war in Syria. Izdihar became aware that there were many poor families living in the community who were struggling to make ends meet. They were having babies and these babies were not being cared for because the parents did not have either the resources or the knowledge required. On 4th August 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the port of the city of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, exploded, causing at least 207 deaths, 7,500 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, and leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless. This is a very difficult situation. The Lebanese economy was in steep decline long before the blast and there were many people in need. Add to this the huge numbers of Syrian refugees in the country, political instability and the impact of COVID-19, the last thing they needed was another catastrophe. But that is exactly what they got.
